Great White Sharks

All of these images of flying Great White Sharks were taken off the coast of South Africa at Seal Island in False bay.

My first experience of Great White Sharks was growing up watching the Jaws movies and as a result any time I went in the water I was convinced there must be one lying in wait to get me, but now I know better.

I first saw the breaching behaviour ( where the sharks follow their prey from below then accelerate upwards at about 30kmh often taking both predator and prey clear of the water) on the first BBC Planet Earth series. I was blown away watching a Great White breaching in slow motion and knew I had to see this for myself.I decided to book in for a month of trips at the peak time of year for hunting in the hope of just witnessing this spectacle , little did I know how much it would change my opinion of sharks and little did I realise back then how difficult it would prove to be to shoot images of Great White natural predation.

There is so many elements that make photography difficult when shooting this behaviour - There is the boat moving and bouncing off the waves often sending spray directly into the lens, you try to stabilise yourself as the wind blows you and the boat while trying to hold a large lens steady for long periods tracking the movements of a Cape Fur Seal which only surfaces from time to time and all the while never knowing from where or when a Great White can come hurtling up from below , there is also a high chance that the seal you are pointing the camera at is not the one that gets attacked, So many times I have heard another person on board scream with excitement only for me to turn round and see the splash where a Shark has just landed back in the water. Often the Seals gather together at a place called the Launch Pad and leave the island at the same time in different groups and head different directions , you just have to hope you get lucky and pick the right group.

The very first morning my perception of Great White Sharks was immediately changed as I spent time down in the surface cage as curious sharks came in to check me out and never with any aggression. Amazing to see these large predators cruise slowly by within arms reach making eye contact. To this date Great White Sharks breaching is the most amazing animal behaviour I have been lucky enough to witness.
